Avara Brand and Family Wallet Phased Out
Aave Labs announced it is sunsetting the Avara brand, an umbrella identity that previously housed projects like the Family wallet and the Lens social media protocol. The Family wallet will be fully wound down as part of the transition.
All products, including the Aave mobile app, Aave Pro, and Aave Kit, will now operate solely under the Aave Labs name, simplifying branding and product focus.
Return to Core DeFi Strategy
The decision marks a strategic pivot back to DeFi after earlier attempts to expand into broader web3 verticals. Aave Labs said the shift allows it to concentrate resources on scaling the Aave lending protocol and onboarding new users globally.
Lens was sold earlier this year, signaling a clear exit from non-lending initiatives.
DAO Governance Tensions Persist
The timing also reflects unresolved friction between Aave Labs and the Aave DAO. While the DAO controls protocol parameters and smart contracts, Aave Labs owns key offchain assets including branding, domains, and the main frontend.
Past disputes over fee redirection and IP ownership highlighted governance ambiguities that remain unresolved, despite proposals to share non-protocol revenue with AAVE holders.
