Key Highlights:
  • New SEC Filing: Bitwise Asset Management has filed a Form S-1 for a spot SUI ETF, seeking to give investors direct exposure to the native token of the Sui Network.

  • Institutional Custody: The filing designates Coinbase Custody as the fund's custodian, mirroring the structure of many successful Bitcoin and Ether ETFs.

  • Staking Potential: Unlike many existing crypto ETFs, Bitwise’s proposal includes plans to stake the fund's SUI tokens to generate additional rewards for shareholders.

  • Sui Momentum: SUI is currently the 31st largest cryptocurrency by market cap; the filing follows recent SEC approval of a 2x leveraged SUI product from 21Shares.

Bitwise Expands Altcoin Offerings

Crypto index manager Bitwise is the latest firm to seek SEC approval for an exchange-traded fund tracking SUI, the native asset of the Sui Layer 1 blockchain. The filing marks a major expansion of Bitwise's single-asset lineup, which already includes products for Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana. The proposed Bitwise SUI ETF would provide regulated, 100% spot exposure to the token, which was originally developed by former Meta (Facebook) engineers.

A Staking-Enabled ETF

A notable feature of the Bitwise filing is the intent to incorporate staking. The trust plans to use a portion of its SUI holdings to participate in network validation, with the resulting rewards accruing to the fund’s net asset value (NAV). This could potentially allow the ETF to outperform the spot price of SUI by capturing yield, a feature that has become a major point of competition among prospective altcoin ETF issuers in late 2025.

Regulatory Environment

The filing comes as the SEC, under Chair Paul Atkins, has moved toward greater regulatory clarity and standardized listing frameworks for digital assets. While the agency was historically cautious, the recent approval of leveraged SUI products and spot ETFs for other altcoins suggests a more streamlined path to market. SUI has gained significant institutional interest recently, with Bitwise also adding the token to its 10 Crypto Index ETF on the New York Stock Exchange.
