- Cobie will now lead development of the Base app.
- Jesse Pollak will focus on Base's blockchain infrastructure.
- Coinbase admitted several social-focused initiatives failed.
- Base is shifting toward trading, stablecoins, and AI.
Coinbase executive Jesse Pollak has handed leadership of the Base app to crypto investor Cobie after acknowledging that several of Base's social-focused initiatives failed to gain widespread adoption.
Pollak said experiments involving creator coins, Farcaster integrations, Zora, and other social features did not deliver the expected results, prompting a strategic shift for the Ethereum Layer 2 network.
Going forward, Pollak will concentrate on expanding Base's core blockchain infrastructure with a stronger focus on trading, tokenized assets, stablecoin payments, and AI applications. Cobie, who joined Coinbase after the acquisition of Echo, will oversee future development of the Base app.
The leadership change reflects a broader trend across the crypto industry as infrastructure, tokenization, and institutional adoption take priority over consumer-focused social applications.
