Base has introduced a new protocol designed to connect AI assistants directly with crypto wallet infrastructure, enabling users to interact with blockchain applications using simple natural language commands.
The Coinbase-incubated Ethereum scaling network announced Tuesday that its new Base MCP gateway allows AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor to securely connect with Base Accounts and execute onchain actions.
The integration is built on the open Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging standard initially formalized by Anthropic for enabling AI systems to interact with external applications and tools.
With Base MCP, users can prompt AI assistants to swap tokens, transfer funds, interact with DeFi applications, or explore newly launched assets directly through conversational interfaces.
At launch, the protocol integrates with several Base ecosystem applications including Morpho, Moonwell, Aerodrome, Avantis, Virtuals, Bankr, and Uniswap, covering lending, trading, perpetual futures, and AI agent-related applications.
Base emphasized that the system remains fully non-custodial. The MCP server never controls user private keys. Instead, AI agents prepare transaction requests locally, which are then sent to the user’s wallet for manual review and signing.
The protocol also uses OAuth 2.1 authentication, similar to systems powering Sign in with Google and the Base App, helping streamline user access while maintaining security standards.
According to Base, the architecture could also reduce certain phishing and domain hijacking risks common in traditional crypto interfaces because AI agents generate transaction requests locally rather than relying on potentially compromised web frontends.
The launch reflects a broader trend across crypto and AI infrastructure, where blockchain platforms are increasingly positioning themselves as programmable financial layers for autonomous AI systems and agents.
