Laying the Groundwork for “Agentic Commerce”
Cloudflare has announced a partnership with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express to build payment standards for AI agents — autonomous bots capable of performing online purchases on behalf of users. The system, known as the Trusted Agent Protocol, uses Cloudflare’s Web Bot Auth standard to verify AI identity and transaction legitimacy.
A Convergence of AI and Crypto
The collaboration expands Cloudflare’s growing focus on blockchain-linked payment systems. It follows its recent plans for the NET Dollar stablecoin and its joint venture with Coinbase under the x402 Foundation to standardize payments between AI agents and web services.
These technologies aim to enable frictionless “machine-to-machine” payments where AI can negotiate and pay instantly using digital assets or stablecoins.
A Growing Industry Movement
Beyond the three major card networks, Cloudflare’s partners include Circle, Shopify, Fiserv, Webflow, and Microsoft — all working toward secure, programmable transaction systems.
“The future of commerce is agentic,” said Cloudflare’s Chief Strategy Officer Stephanie Cohen. “We’re building the trusted foundation for that future.”
