Coinbase is expanding its business platform by allowing merchants to accept payments directly from AI agents, calling agentic payments one of the company's highest-conviction opportunities.
The new feature is powered by Coinbase Payments and the x402 open payment standard, allowing AI agents to automatically purchase digital services such as APIs, cloud storage, domain names and software without human intervention.
According to Coinbase, more than 5,000 businesses have already joined Coinbase Business, processing around $1 billion in combined trading and payment volume since launch.
The company also introduced Coinbase for Agents and a new SDK that makes it easier for developers to integrate AI-powered crypto payments into their applications.
Coinbase believes AI commerce is still in its early stages but expects adoption to accelerate as more businesses begin accepting payments from autonomous software agents.
