AI Agents Move From Advising to Acting
Coinbase has introduced Agentic Wallets, a new wallet infrastructure built specifically for autonomous AI agents. The goal is simple: give any agent a wallet so it can transact independently onchain.
Until now, most AI agents could provide recommendations but could not execute transactions without human approval. Coinbase is trying to remove that limitation. With Agentic Wallets, bots can hold crypto, send payments, rebalance portfolios, trade tokens, and earn yield automatically, based on predefined permissions.
This marks a shift from AI assistants that suggest actions to systems that execute them.
Built on the x402 Machine Payment Standard
The wallet infrastructure builds on Coinbase’s x402 protocol, which is designed to enable crypto-native payments between machines without human intervention. The system uses programmable permissions, spending caps, and session controls to reduce risk.
Private keys remain secured inside Coinbase infrastructure and are never exposed to the AI agent itself. Initially, the wallets support EVM chains and Solana, with gasless transactions available on Base.
Coinbase says over 50 million x402 transactions have already been processed since launch. The company is positioning Agentic Wallets as foundational infrastructure for an internet where AI systems can pay and get paid autonomously.
