MetaMask Enters the AI Agent Economy

MetaMask has unveiled Agent Wallet, a new non-custodial wallet built specifically for AI agents operating on blockchain networks.

The wallet enables autonomous systems to manage digital assets and execute actions such as token swaps, perpetual futures trading, liquidity provision, and participation in prediction markets across Ethereum-compatible chains and Hyperliquid.

Consensys founder Joe Lubin described AI agents as a major future driver of blockchain activity.

Balancing Automation and Security

A key challenge for AI-powered finance is allowing agents to act independently while maintaining user control.

MetaMask says every transaction initiated through Agent Wallet must undergo simulation and comply with user-defined rules. These controls include daily spending limits, approved address lists, and customizable operating parameters.

Transactions flagged as risky by security provider Blockaid can trigger additional approval requirements through email or two-factor authentication.

Protection for Approved Transactions

To further strengthen trust, MetaMask is extending Transaction Protection coverage to Agent Wallet users.

According to the announcement, qualifying transactions deemed safe under the platform's risk framework may be covered for up to $10,000, subject to terms and conditions.

The company believes these safeguards can help address concerns around autonomous financial agents managing real capital.

Broad Compatibility Planned

Agent Wallet is being developed as a framework-agnostic product.

The wallet is expected to support tools and platforms including OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenClaw, and Nous Research Hermes Agent.

MetaMask has started rolling out early access through a command-line interface and expects broader public availability later this summer as demand for AI-driven financial tools continues to grow.
