The move reinforces BTC as Binance’s long-term reserve asset.
SAFU Fully Converted to Bitcoin
Binance confirmed it has finalized the conversion of its Secure Asset Fund for Users, or SAFU, into bitcoin. The exchange purchased a final 4,545 BTC tranche, bringing total holdings to 15,000 BTC.
At completion, the fund was valued at approximately $1.005 billion based on a bitcoin price of $67,000. The transition was completed within 30 days of Binance’s original announcement.
SAFU was established in 2018 as an emergency reserve designed to protect users in the event of security incidents. Historically, the fund included a mix of crypto and stablecoins.
Bitcoin as the Primary Reserve Asset
By fully converting SAFU into BTC, Binance is signaling strong long-term conviction in bitcoin as a reserve asset. The exchange also published the wallet address associated with the fund to improve transparency.
To manage volatility risk, Binance stated it will rebalance the fund if its value drops below $800 million. In that case, additional bitcoin would be purchased to restore the fund to $1 billion.
The move positions bitcoin not just as a trading asset, but as core financial infrastructure within exchange risk management.
