The Czech National Bank created a 1 million dollar test portfolio that includes bitcoin, a USD stablecoin, and a tokenized deposit.

The goal is to gain hands on experience with digital assets but not to add BTC to national reserves yet.

The pilot tests custody, accounting, key management, and compliance processes.

The initiative follows earlier discussions about bitcoin as a potential reserve diversifier.
A First Step Into Digital Assets
The Czech National Bank has purchased bitcoin and other blockchain based instruments for the first time, creating a small test portfolio worth 1 million dollars. The move is not tied to its official reserve holdings. Instead, the bank wants practical experience managing digital assets as global finance shifts toward tokenization and new payment systems.
A Controlled Environment for Testing
The portfolio includes bitcoin, a USD stablecoin, and a tokenized deposit. The goal is to explore the operational challenges of storing, settling, accounting for, and auditing digital assets. The bank highlighted processes such as key management, crisis handling, and anti money laundering controls as core focus areas. Because the portfolio is small, volatility will not affect the bank’s financial position.
Preparing for Future Financial Infrastructure
Governor Aleš Michl said the central bank wants to understand Bitcoin’s characteristics from an institutional perspective and evaluate its potential role as a reserve diversifier. He stressed that the koruna remains the country’s legal tender and that the pilot will not influence monetary policy. The effort aligns with the launch of CNB Lab, a new innovation hub aimed at testing technologies including blockchain and AI.
Part of a Broader Exploration
Earlier this year, Michl suggested allocating up to 5 percent of the country’s reserves to bitcoin, though the board postponed a decision. The bank has also explored broader digital asset opportunities, including purchasing Coinbase shares as part of diversification plans. While this pilot is small, it is the first confirmed case of the Czech National Bank directly acquiring bitcoin, marking a notable step in its long term evaluation of digital assets.
