Harvard Makes A Significant Move Into Bitcoin
Harvard University has sharply expanded its exposure to bitcoin by nearly tripling its holdings of BlackRock’s IBIT spot bitcoin ETF. The endowment now holds more than 6.8 million shares, up from 1.9 million in June. This increase makes IBIT the largest declared U.S. investment for the world’s biggest academic endowment fund.
As of September 30, the position was worth $442.8 million. Due to recent market volatility, the value has since dropped to around $364.4 million, but the scale of the position still reflects a strong level of conviction.
Growing Institutional Interest
Bloomberg analysts noted that it is rare for a major endowment to take such a large position in a new ETF category. Even though the allocation represents only around 0.6 percent of Harvard’s total endowment, the move is seen as a major endorsement for the asset class.
Harvard’s increased activity follows similar patterns among other institutions. Emory University doubled its holdings of Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust and maintained a smaller IBIT position. Meanwhile, Al Warda Investments, an Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, raised its IBIT holdings to nearly eight million shares.
Bitcoin ETFs Gain Momentum
IBIT remains the leading spot bitcoin ETF by assets under management, although it has experienced outflows as bitcoin’s price dropped below the 100,000 dollar mark. Even with market pressure, these new filings highlight how bitcoin exposure through regulated ETFs is becoming more common among large institutions.
