Billionaire investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban says he has sold most of his Bitcoin holdings after becoming increasingly disappointed with the asset’s recent performance.
Speaking during an interview with Front Office Sports, Cuban said Bitcoin failed to behave like the inflation hedge he once believed it could become.
“Bitcoin Has Lost the Plot”
Cuban explained that he originally viewed Bitcoin as a superior version of gold and expected it to rise when confidence in fiat currencies weakened.
Instead, he pointed to recent market conditions where gold prices surged while Bitcoin struggled.
“I always thought it was a better version of gold than gold,” Cuban said. “But gold just blew up and went to $5,000, and Bitcoin dropped.”
He added that Bitcoin’s price action during periods of dollar weakness did not match his expectations.
“Every time the dollar dropped, Bitcoin should’ve gone up,” Cuban said. “It’s not the hedge I expected it to be.”
Bitcoin is currently trading well below its previous all-time highs after a volatile year for global markets.
Cuban Turns Against Meme Coins
Cuban also used the interview to criticize meme coins and speculative token activity.
Although he previously explored launching his own meme coin project, he now describes most meme tokens as “garbage.”
Last year, Cuban publicly stepped away from plans tied to meme coins, saying transparency and fairness in the sector remained major concerns.
He compared the market to a game of musical chairs, where most participants are ultimately left exposed.
NFTs and Crypto Still Lack Mainstream Utility
The billionaire also expressed disappointment with NFTs and the broader crypto industry, saying many projects still fail to deliver practical use cases for everyday consumers.
“I don’t know if it’s dead, but I’d say it's disappointing,” Cuban said regarding NFTs.
He argued that crypto still lacks a truly mainstream application capable of reaching ordinary users outside the trading and speculation environment.
Despite his criticism, Cuban has long been one of crypto’s more vocal mainstream supporters. Over the years, he publicly backed Dogecoin, supported NFTs, and integrated crypto payments into the Dallas Mavericks organization during his ownership of the NBA franchise.
