- Base plans to activate the Beryl upgrade on June 25.
- The update introduces the new B20 token standard.
- Withdrawals to Ethereum will become faster.
- The upgrade also improves network scalability.
Coinbase-backed Base is preparing to launch its second major network upgrade, called Beryl, on June 25.
The headline feature is the introduction of B20, a native token standard that allows assets such as stablecoins to be issued directly through Base's core infrastructure rather than through traditional smart contracts.
Unlike ERC-20 tokens, which run as smart contracts on Ethereum-compatible networks, B20 tokens operate directly within Base's node software. This approach is designed to improve efficiency while remaining compatible with existing wallets, exchanges, and blockchain tools.
The upgrade will also reduce the standard withdrawal period from Base to Ethereum from seven days to five days. While some users already have access to faster withdrawal options, Beryl focuses on improving the most commonly used withdrawal process.
In addition, the network will receive performance upgrades that reduce storage requirements and increase available blockspace for developers.
Base says the faster release schedule is possible because the network now operates on a more independent technology stack. Its next major upgrade, Cobalt, is expected to arrive in September.
