Key Highlights:
  • Base will move away from the OP Stack to a unified, Base-operated software stack.

  • The shift reduces reliance on Optimism, Flashbots, and Paradigm components.

  • Base will remain a Stage 1 rollup but introduce Base-specific TEE/ZK proofs.

  • Multiple hard forks are planned to complete the transition.

Breaking from the OP Stack

Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 incubated by Coinbase, announced it will move away from Optimism’s Superchain ecosystem.

Instead of relying on the OP Stack, Base will consolidate its infrastructure into a unified repository called base/base. The goal is to simplify coordination and reduce maintenance overhead by directly optimizing components for Base’s specific needs.

Base has been the largest chain in the OP Stack ecosystem, making this shift particularly significant for the broader Superchain vision led by Optimism Foundation.

New Proofs and Hard Forks Ahead

Base will remain a Stage 1 rollup under Vitalik Buterin’s decentralization framework. However, upcoming upgrades will introduce Base-specific TEE and ZK proofs, replacing Optimistic proofs over time.

A Base V1 hard fork will add Fusaka support and begin the migration. Two additional hard forks are planned to further reduce dependencies on Optimism, with node operators required to transition to Base’s new client software.

The move suggests Base is positioning for deeper autonomy and potentially future token or governance changes.
