- eToro launches crypto services in New York after 3 years
- Starts with ~20 tokens, with plans to expand
- BitLicense remains a major barrier to entry
- Federal regulation could simplify U.S. crypto market
A long-awaited market entry
eToro has officially launched crypto trading services in New York, more than three years after receiving the state’s BitLicense.
The platform will initially offer around 20 cryptocurrencies, significantly fewer than the 100+ tokens available in other regions, reflecting New York’s strict regulatory requirements.
Why New York is so difficult
The BitLicense, introduced in 2015, is one of the most demanding regulatory frameworks for crypto companies. Fewer than 40 firms have been approved, and even fewer have successfully launched full services.
Many companies choose to avoid the state entirely due to compliance costs, legal complexity, and ongoing oversight. eToro itself had to create a separate entity to operate within New York.
Gradual rollout and future plans
eToro plans to expand its offering over time and introduce staking services, which also require additional regulatory approval.
The company emphasized that launching in New York is not just about access to users, but also about demonstrating compliance in one of the strictest regulatory environments globally.
Broader implications for the U.S. market
The fragmented nature of U.S. regulation, where each state has its own rules, continues to slow adoption. eToro’s leadership pointed to the Clarity Act as a potential solution that could unify standards and make it easier for firms to scale nationwide.
