Prediction market activity exploded in June as the FIFA World Cup drove millions of dollars into sports-related contracts.

Kalshi, Polymarket, and Polymarket US generated a combined $44.8 billion in monthly trading volume, representing a 75% increase from May's $25.7 billion.

Kalshi led the surge, with volume climbing 87% to $31.5 billion. Polymarket's international platform processed over $10.2 billion, while its regulated U.S. platform continued its steady growth to more than $3 billion.

The biggest driver has been the ongoing FIFA World Cup, with Kalshi's tournament winner market alone attracting more than $832 million in wagers. Individual match markets on Polymarket have also generated between $500,000 and $2 million in trading volume.

Despite booming adoption, both platforms continue facing legal challenges from multiple U.S. states, which argue the sports-related contracts resemble unlicensed sports betting. Kalshi and Polymarket maintain that their federally regulated prediction markets fall under U.S. commodities law rather than state gambling rules.

The rapid growth highlights how major global events are accelerating adoption of blockchain-based prediction markets despite ongoing regulatory uncertainty.
