First-of-Its-Kind Stablecoin Settlement Pilot

Mastercard is collaborating with Ripple and Gemini to test card settlements using Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The companies said this marks one of the first cases where a regulated U.S. bank clears card transactions using a regulated stablecoin on a public blockchain.

Integration Expands Ripple and Gemini Ecosystems

Gemini, which already issues credit cards through WebBank, will use RLUSD to settle fiat transactions. The firm’s XRP Card Edition allows customers to earn rewards in XRP, while a Solana edition offering 4% SOL cashback launched last month.

Mastercard’s Broader Digital Push

Mastercard has been strengthening its blockchain footprint with partners like Chainlink, Circle, and now Ripple. Wednesday’s announcement also included a new partnership with Humanity Protocol to connect blockchain identity tools with real-world credit services.

Institutional Interest Growing in Onchain Payments

The initiative highlights Mastercard’s growing role in linking traditional finance with blockchain settlement infrastructure, as banks and fintechs experiment with onchain payment rails for faster, cheaper global transactions.
