Sony Prepares to Enter the U.S. Stablecoin Market
Sony Bank is preparing to issue a U.S. dollar stablecoin designed for use across Sony’s entertainment ecosystem. Sources told Nikkei that the company plans to establish a U.S. division and has already applied for a banking license.
Sony is partnering with U.S. stablecoin issuer Bastion, which will provide the underlying issuance infrastructure.
Stablecoin Targeted at U.S. Digital Content Consumers
Sony expects the stablecoin to be used for game purchases, anime subscriptions, and other content, reducing reliance on credit card networks and lowering transaction fees for consumers and creators across its platforms.
The company’s U.S. market is central to the plan, as it accounts for more than 30 percent of Sony’s global external sales.
