- South Korea to pilot blockchain-based deposit tokens
- Tokens will replace government credit card spending
- Aim is to improve transparency and reduce inefficiencies
- Full rollout could begin later this year
Government Moves Toward Blockchain Payments
South Korea is launching a pilot program to use blockchain-based deposit tokens for government expenses.
The system is meant to replace traditional government credit card usage for official spending.
Improving Transparency and Control
With deposit tokens, authorities can pre-define how and when funds are used. This removes the need for manual reporting in cases like late-night or weekend spending.
It also improves oversight, since all transactions are recorded on a transparent system.
Reducing Costs and Complexity
The new model removes intermediaries, which could lower transaction fees, especially for smaller businesses working with the government.
The pilot will begin in Sejong City, with a broader rollout planned later this year if successful.
Part of a Bigger Crypto Strategy
This initiative is part of South Korea’s wider push to regulate and adopt digital assets, including upcoming laws covering stablecoins and tokenized assets.
