Tempo: A Blockchain Built for Payments
Tempo, the payments-focused protocol valued at roughly $5 billion after a $500 million funding round, has just launched its public testnet. The project was initially incubated by global payments giant Stripe and major crypto investment firm Paradigm. This is a crucial step before its full launch (mainnet), allowing developers and partners to test its functionality in a live environment.
Solving the Payments Problem in Crypto
The core goal of Tempo is to overcome the main issues that traditional blockchains have when handling financial applications. The network is built to deliver instant, deterministic settlement, predictably low fees, and a stablecoin-native experience. Tempo’s design makes it an Ethereum-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that is optimized for high-throughput payments and settlement, qualities that most general-purpose blockchains still struggle to provide for real-time financial use cases.
Big Names Join as Partners
Tempo has already secured significant partnerships to shape its network. Companies like Prediction platform Kalshi, Mastercard, and UBS are all considered "design partners." Furthermore, the protocol is also reportedly working with other huge firms, including OpenAI, Shopify, Visa, Anthropic, and Deutsche Bank. This broad collaboration indicates a strong push for real-world adoption. Last month, the "buy now, pay later" company Klarna launched KlarnaUSD, a USD-backed stablecoin issued on Tempo, which is slated to launch on the mainnet in 2026.
