Pilot Program for Tourists
Thailand has launched TouristDigiPay, a pilot program that allows foreign visitors to convert crypto assets into Thai baht for local spending. The program began Monday and will run for 18 months under oversight from the Ministry of Finance and related regulators.
How It Works
Visitors will be able to exchange crypto through regulated platforms, with converted funds usable across merchants in the country. However, authorities emphasized the program is not designed to encourage crypto as a direct payment method.
Regulatory Context
The project follows Thailand’s broader pro-crypto stance. Last month, the government approved a tax exemption on crypto transactions through 2029. Strict anti-money laundering and KYC rules will still apply to all participants.
