Crypto Recognized as Legitimate Derivatives Underlying
Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission announced plans to integrate digital assets into the country’s regulated derivatives market. The update broadens permissible underlying assets to include cryptocurrencies and carbon credits.
This follows Cabinet approval aimed at aligning Thailand’s derivatives framework with international standards while maintaining investor protection and risk oversight.
The change could enable bitcoin-linked futures, options, and other structured products on platforms like the Thailand Futures Exchange.
Next Phase of Regulatory Development
The SEC will now draft supporting regulations and adjust derivatives business licenses to allow digital asset operators to offer crypto-referenced contracts.
Regulators will also review clearing house and exchange supervision rules to accommodate crypto-based products. Officials stated the expansion supports diversification, better risk management, and wider market participation.
Thailand has positioned itself as a regional digital asset hub, and this step strengthens its integration of crypto into traditional financial infrastructure.
