Crypto assets may be recognized under derivatives law
Thailand is preparing to roll out new regulations that would allow crypto exchange-traded funds and crypto futures trading later this year, according to local media reports.
The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission plans to issue formal guidelines supporting crypto ETFs and permitting crypto futures on the Thailand Futures Exchange. Regulators say ETFs are attractive to investors because they remove risks related to hacking and wallet management.
The SEC has already approved crypto ETFs in principle and is now finalizing operational and investment rules. The regulator is also working to recognize crypto assets as an underlying asset class under the country’s Derivatives Act, which would give futures products a clearer legal foundation.
Under the proposed framework, crypto futures would trade under existing futures laws, allowing investors to hedge exposure or use more advanced trading strategies. Officials say the move reflects a shift toward a more structured and growth-oriented approach to crypto regulation.
At the same time, Thai authorities continue to monitor stablecoin usage, particularly USDT, amid concerns about cross-border flows and unregulated activity. The new rules are expected to strengthen oversight while expanding regulated access to digital asset markets.
