Usability Is the Future of Crypto

During his keynote address at the Token2049 conference, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized that while crypto is no longer a new phenomenon, it is now becoming more usable. He pointed out that the current Ethereum ecosystem offers much lower transaction fees and an improved user experience, making it easier for developers and users alike to engage with blockchain technology.

Ethereum’s Improvements

Buterin acknowledged that in the early days, high transaction fees and clunky user interfaces limited the mass adoption of crypto. However, with Ethereum’s protocol upgrades, such as EIP-1559, transaction fees have dropped to near-zero, and Layer 2 solutions like Optimism and Arbitrum have made the network more scalable and user-friendly.

Blockchains as Digital Concrete

Buterin introduced the idea of blockchains as “digital concrete,” providing a strong foundation for creating secure and lasting digital structures. He noted that these structures can serve multiple purposes, from creating safe spaces for communities to preserving cultural history, all while maintaining the decentralization ethos that crypto was built on.
