Preparing Ethereum for Quantum Threats
Ethereum Foundation has formed a new post-quantum security team to accelerate preparation for future quantum computing risks. Senior researcher Justin Drake called the initiative a top strategic priority for the network.
The team is led by cryptographic engineer Thomas Coratger and focuses on developing quantum-resistant cryptographic primitives that could one day replace today’s vulnerable signature schemes.
Funding Research and Development
To support the effort, the foundation announced a $1 million Poseidon Prize aimed at strengthening a core hash function used in Ethereum’s zero-knowledge proof systems. This builds on a previously announced $1 million Proximity Prize for broader post-quantum research.
Multiple Ethereum clients are already testing post-quantum development networks, signaling that this work is moving beyond theory and into early implementation.
Why Ethereum Has an Advantage
Unlike Bitcoin, which would likely require a contentious hard fork to migrate to quantum-safe signatures, Ethereum’s account abstraction roadmap allows for a more flexible upgrade path.
Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly emphasized quantum resistance as non-negotiable, estimating a meaningful probability that quantum computers capable of breaking current cryptography could emerge before 2030.
