Scaling Ethereum with a Rollup-Centric Approach

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined an ambitious roadmap to scale Ethereum to 100,000 transactions per second (TPS). This goal, highlighted in a new blog post, focuses on enhancing the rollup-centric scaling approach that integrates Layer 2 solutions and sharding.

Data Availability and High-Volume Applications

Buterin also detailed the potential of data availability sampling, which allows nodes to verify data without downloading it entirely. By increasing data availability bandwidth, Ethereum could achieve 58,000 TPS in the medium term. For applications with high transaction volumes and lower value, like social and payment apps, Buterin suggested solutions such as Plasma, which allows data to be stored off-chain.

Mainnet Scaling and Long-Term Vision

To secure Ethereum’s base layer, Buterin considered gradually increasing the gas limit while preserving decentralization. This cautious approach seeks to prevent risks to Ethereum’s security and maintain its value as a decentralized network.
