Dong Nguyen, the creator of the hit mobile game Flappy Bird, has returned to social media to address rumors about the game’s potential relaunch as a GameFi product. This marks his first appearance since 2017.
The Original Flappy Bird
Flappy Bird became a viral sensation in 2014, known for its simple yet addictive gameplay. However, Nguyen removed the game from app stores, citing concerns about its addictive nature and the unwanted fame it brought him. Despite its absence, the game has remained a part of mobile gaming culture, and rumors of its return have persisted.
GameFi Speculation and Trademark Dispute
Recently, cybersecurity researcher Varun Biniwale discovered deleted pages on the Flappy Bird website mentioning blockchain platforms Solana, TON, and a $FLAP token, suggesting a possible "Flap-to-Earn" mode. However, Nguyen has disavowed any involvement with these developments. He explained that the game’s rights had been taken from him due to inactivity, and any relaunch has nothing to do with him.
Community Reaction
Community members clarified that the rights to the game had been acquired by another entity, and Nguyen’s role in the project was no longer relevant. While some fans are excited about the potential for a GameFi version of Flappy Bird, Nguyen’s statements indicate that he will not be involved in the project’s future.
