A prominent crypto whale has lost more than $32 million worth of Spark wrapped ether tokens (spWETH) after falling victim to a phishing attack. The attack, powered by the Inferno Drainer scam-as-a-service, targeted the whale by spoofing a popular DeFi protocol, convincing them to sign a malicious transaction.

Details of the Phishing Attack

The attack was first spotted by blockchain security service ScamSniffer, which noted that the whale lost 12,083 spWETH tokens, valued at around $32.4 million. Inferno Drainer, the scam platform used in the attack, has stolen over $215 million from more than 200,000 victims since it began. Although the scam service was shut down in 2023, it resumed operations in 2024 with new features. The victim has offered a 20% reward for the return of the stolen funds, but no response from the attacker has been received. Blockchain intelligence firm LookOnChain advised users to be cautious when signing unknown transactions to avoid similar phishing schemes. Source: The Block
