Third Repayment Delay Announced

Defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox has once again postponed its creditor repayment deadline, moving it from October 31, 2025, to October 31, 2026. The decision was announced by the exchange’s rehabilitation trustee on Monday, just days before the original deadline.

The trustee said repayments have been “largely completed” for creditors who successfully fulfilled eligibility requirements, but many have not yet received funds due to unresolved procedural issues.

Ongoing Effort to Complete Repayments

The extension marks the third deadline delay since the process began. Mt. Gox initially planned repayments for 2023 before extending twice. The trustee emphasized that the additional time will help complete pending repayments “to the extent reasonably practicable.”

History of the Collapse

Mt. Gox was one of the earliest bitcoin exchanges before it collapsed in 2014 after losing 850,000 BTC in a massive hack. Recovery efforts began years later, with plans to distribute recovered assets including 142,000 BTC, 143,000 BCH, and over 69 billion yen in fiat.

To date, about 19,500 creditors have received repayments through exchanges like Kraken and Bitstamp. Onchain data shows Mt. Gox still holds 34,689 BTC, valued at around $4 billion.
