Proposal Aims to Fight Fraud with Onchain Transparency
New York Assemblyman Clyde Vanel has introduced a proposal to explore the use of blockchain in safeguarding elections and combating voter fraud. The bill instructs the state’s Board of Elections to study blockchain's ability to provide “uncensored truth” in democratic decision-making.
If passed, the Board will have 12 months to deliver findings and insights based on blockchain adoption in other states.
Legislative Path Ahead
The bill is currently under committee review. If advanced, it will go through the Assembly floor, the Senate, and ultimately require the Governor’s signature. Vanel has submitted similar proposals since 2017, none of which have become law.
Blockchain Interest Grows in the U.S.
New York is not alone in eyeing blockchain innovation. The state established a Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Study Task Force in 2023 and pioneered BitLicense back in 2015. Since President Trump’s re-election and pro-crypto executive orders, over 15 states have introduced laws to invest in Bitcoin through public funds.
States like Arizona and Utah are leading the charge, though Utah recently removed its crypto investment language from pending legislation.
