The bill could reshape US crypto regulation if passed
Despite a last-minute delay, US lawmakers say a major crypto market structure bill remains close to completion.
The Senate Banking Committee had planned to hold a full-day session to amend and vote on the bill, which aims to divide oversight of digital assets between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. That plan was postponed after key industry opposition emerged.
Concerns raised by crypto firms, including Coinbase, focused on stablecoin rewards, user privacy, and the level of authority granted to the SEC. Shortly after those objections became public, the committee chair delayed the hearing.
Several lawmakers insisted the pause does not mean the bill is stalled. Supporters say discussions are continuing behind the scenes, with the goal of reaching a bipartisan compromise that provides long-term regulatory clarity.
Analysts are split on what the delay means. Some see it as a strategic pause that could improve the final outcome, while others warn that political pressure and upcoming elections could make consensus harder to achieve. Any final bill will still need enough bipartisan support to overcome procedural hurdles in the Senate.
