U.S. Crypto Regulation Enters Critical Phase

The White House is now aiming to finalize a major federal crypto regulation bill before July 4, according to Patrick Witt, executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets.

If passed, the legislation would represent the first comprehensive federal framework for regulating the crypto industry in the United States.

What the Bill Would Do

One of the central goals is to clearly divide authority between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

For years, uncertainty over whether crypto assets qualify as securities or commodities has created legal confusion for exchanges, developers, and investors.

The bill also aims to establish rules for stablecoins, trading platforms, and market structure standards.

Ethics Debate Becomes Central Issue

A major obstacle now involves ethics concerns tied to President Trump’s crypto involvement.

Several Democrats want provisions that would limit potential conflicts of interest for public officials involved in crypto businesses or token launches. This follows scrutiny around projects tied to the Trump family, including memecoins and World Liberty Financial.

Why Timing Matters

The administration appears eager to pass legislation before the 2026 election cycle intensifies further.

The U.S. has been criticized for lagging behind jurisdictions like Europe and parts of Asia, where crypto regulations are already operational. Passing a federal framework could provide greater certainty for institutional investors and reduce the risk of companies moving offshore.
