Ethereum Co-founder Supports Thai Zoo

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, donated $293,000 (10 million Thai baht) to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. The funds officially make him the “adoptive father” of Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus who became a global sensation in 2024.

A Token of Gratitude for Thai Hospitality

Buterin highlighted Thailand’s warm hospitality during Ethereum events like November’s Devcon SEA conference in Bangkok. The donation funds zoo operations, supports its Wildlife Sponsorship Program, and finances a dedicated exhibit for Moo Deng and her family.

The Fame of Moo Deng

Moo Deng, an endangered pygmy hippopotamus, charmed the internet with her playful antics. Her name, meaning “bouncy pork,” was selected via public poll. She also inspired a popular memecoin with a market capitalization of $270M, peaking at $614M in November.

Ethereum Community Gesture

Buterin described the gesture as a gift from the Ethereum ecosystem to Thailand, honoring Moo Deng as a cherished national symbol. The zoo responded with gratitude, emphasizing the positive impact on its community and conservation efforts.
