A Piece of Meme History Changes Hands
The famous pink knitted beanie worn by Achi, the Shiba Inu behind the Dogwifhat memecoin, has sold for 6.8 BTC (about $794,000) in an auction on Ord City. The buyer, known as “Finn,” is the founder of memecoin platform Bags.
Funding the Purchase Through Memecoin Fees
Finn revealed he used fees from a Bags-launched token called “BUY THE HAT” to fund the purchase. He hinted that the hat would be “returned to the community” in some way, possibly by linking it to the token.
From Viral Meme to Big Money
The Dogwifhat meme began in 2018 and went viral in 2020, later inspiring the Solana-based WIF token in 2023. While the beanie fetched nearly $800K, it’s still far less than the $4.3M paid for the NFT of the original photo in March 2024.
Market Impact
After the sale, the “BUY THE HAT” token surged over 700% in value, and WIF also saw a small price bump, showing how strong community-driven meme culture still is in crypto.
