Key Highlights:
  • Major crypto VCs are investing beyond blockchain.
  • AI, robotics, fintech, and energy are attracting capital.
  • Some firms remain crypto-only.
  • Stablecoins and tokenization remain top crypto opportunities.

Several of the crypto industry's largest venture capital firms are expanding beyond blockchain investments as they search for new growth opportunities.

Framework Ventures recently raised a $400 million fund focused on "frontier technologies," including crypto, artificial intelligence, robotics, fintech, and energy. Paradigm is reportedly raising up to $1.5 billion with a similar strategy, while Haun Ventures and YZi Labs have also broadened their investment focus.

Investors say several factors are driving the shift. As the crypto market matures, there are fewer high-quality startups available, while AI and other emerging technologies have become increasingly attractive. Larger venture funds also need more investment opportunities than the crypto sector alone can currently provide.

Despite the expansion, many firms still see strong opportunities within crypto. Stablecoins, tokenization, onchain finance, decentralized AI, and blockchain-based payments remain some of the industry's highest-conviction investment themes.

Not every firm is changing direction. Investors such as a16z Crypto, Dragonfly, and L1D continue focusing exclusively on crypto, arguing that specialized expertise will remain valuable as institutional adoption grows.

Many investors believe crypto venture capital will eventually evolve into broader technology investing, with blockchain becoming one of several major sectors rather than a standalone category.
